Getting
around
Local busses, or songthaew, are an excellent
way of making a day trip into or out of town. There are regular
stops, but you can hop on or off almost anywhere -let the driver
know you want to get out by pressing the buzzer on the roof inside.
Similarly, if you aren't close to a bus stop, you can stand by
the side of the road and flag one down, like a taxi.
A few unscrupulous drivers will try to make tourists pay over-the-odds
for their journey. In reality prices are fixed as follows:
One way from Krabi Town to :
-Ao Nang 15 BAHT
-Ban Chong Phli 20 BAHT
-Nopparat Thara 16 BAHT
-Ao Luk 20 BAHT
From Ao Nang to Nopparat Thara or to the village,
there is no set price, but it should never be more than 10 BAHT.
Pay the driver when you get off the bus.
Be aware that at night ( after sunset ) the Krabi
- Ao Nang route changes. The bus no longer goes via Nopparat,
but directly to Ao Nang. The price also goes up to 50 BAHT. The
last bus from Krabi Town leaves at 10.30 p.m. The first bus in
the morning is at 5.30 a.m.
Motorcycle taxis are a fast, if hair-raising,
way to get around Krabi town. The drivers all wear numbered and
coloured vests and will take you anywhere - for a price, which
is best to negotiate before you get on. Fares to most places in
town should not be more than 20 BAHT, but further afield, expect
to pay a lot more.
Three-wheeler taxis ( samlor ) and tuk - tuks
are also starting to make an appearance. These are not yet regulated
by anyone, so they can charge whatever they like-if you are not
informed. The prices below are rough guidelines only, for a tuk
- tuks carrying 4 people. Larger tuk - tuks, who take more people,
may charge more accordingly.
From Ao Nang to :
-Tiger Cave Temple 300 BAHT
-Krabi Town 200 BAHT
-Bus station 200 BAHT
-Airport 300 BAHT
From Krabi Town to :
-Bus station 100 BAHT
-Tiger Cave Temple 100 BAHT
-Airport 200 BAHT
Ao Nang Long Tail boat club is the organization
regulating the wooden boats that are your best option for independent
island hopping. Boatmen in blue or yellow numbered shirts stand
along the Beach road jostling for business. They can also be found
at the corner of the beach after Krabi Resort and at Had Nopparat
Thara pier.
DO NOT BARGAIN WITH THE BOATMEN !
They are not trying to rip you off : prices are fixed by the boat
club and displayed on large boards. If you try to bargain, you
will get absolutely nowhere and will keep the rest of the boat
waiting.
One way to Ton Sai or Railay Bay : 50 Baht ( 80 Baht after sunset
)
Return from Ao Nang to :
-Chicken Island 250 BAHT
-Poda Island 200 BAHT
-Koh Hong 1500 BAHT
-Half day boat rent 800 BAHT
-Full day boat rent 1500 BAHT
If you are leaving from Krabi Town ( Chao Fah
pier ), prices increase by 20-30 ß-70ß for Railay,
for example.
For independent exploration further afield, there are numberous
private rental options. The cheapest of them is to hire a motorcycle,
although be aware that insurance coverage for theft or accidents
is usually not included and the roads are dangerous. Helmets -
aside from safety reasons - must be worn in Krabi Town, or you
risk a police fine.
Car rental is perhaps a safer, more comfortable
option if there are a few of you to share the cost prices for
an average 4 WD start from around 1200 BAHT per day, including
insurance. Private taxis with drivers can also be hired for the
day for around the same price.
